The Old Rebel at Blackburn Ford

Post by Aloysius Kling Sr » Fri Jul 06, 2018 9:48 am

It is mid-morning and while the sun is rising brightly the smoke from musket and cannon fire seems to have dimmed it some... The Union Army attacked early...

The Old Rebel is now lined up with his other brethren ready to receive another Yankee attack... They gave ground to fall back on their reinforcements, but before doing so the 17th Virginia charged Yankee cannons destroying 4 pieces... And now these brave soldiers face the Union Army alone..
Ready to die defending their country from the Yankee invaders...

The Old Rebel looks on with pride and sadness for his friends in the 17th Virginia... Like his compatriot ready to avenge the 17th and Battle On...

The young union general looks on in disappointment. The wasted life and munitions for a noble cause. The politicians want to push action at the expense of the inexperienced soldiers life. The inexperienced soldiers poorly place themselves. The only thing left is to press on and end this terrible war before the rebellion grows and more lives are taken.

The Old Rebel withdraws with his regiment and the rest of the army to higher ground... The rumor is that the reserves are coming up to join the fight... He also hears the low life Yankees are overrunning defenseless out post (objectives) to gain the advantage in this battle...

He is also sorry that only 32 men of the Virginia 17th escaped after destroying the Yankee Cannon...

A short respite, a drink of water but even with a dry mouth he would rather it was whiskey... He can see the Yankees are on the move again...

Not yet noon and much more fighting to come...

The Union commander stares across the creek. The ford was his given objective. The rebel scum are massing on a ridge some 700+ yards past the creek. A good open field of fire and massed artillery. Having spotted another enemy brigade moving north some distance back, the young Union commander contemplates his next move.

The young Union general is exhausted. His green troops feel the same. It is mid afternoon and both sides are worn out. His boys in blue have done well. They have taken there given objectives, but the losses have been equal. Quietly contemplating his next move, does he stay and defend his position by the ford, or does he push on for one final push against the enemy. Only time will tell.

The Old Rebel's regiment has been attacked over and over again... Fight and withdraw, fight and withdraw and then fight and run... Hard to battle on when one's musket is empty...

The Old Rebel has seen many of his friends die this day... He is tired and thirsty... But the Yankees keep coming... He curses the Confederate units sitting to the south and cannot understand why they do not come to the sound of the guns...

The regiment is regrouping and resupplying to fight once more...
